XVI Habanos Festival!
New Cigars - Hombre Habano - Auctions
Dear fellow aficionados,
It is our turn to be back from the already 16th Habanos Festival.
In the meantime, you may have been informed through various sources about the new cigars we are expecting in 2014. Nevertheless, we already reported on this way beforehand.
On the other hand, what surprised us was that at the last moment there were still a number of changes made and we didn’t get all the supposedly released cigars. The story goes that this has to do with prevention of counterfeiting.
We noticed that the last years fewer and fewer new cigars are offered at the festival.
For instance, we only got 1 of the 3 Edicion Limitadas and there was no mentioning of the Por Larrañaga Picadores, Quintero Petit Quinteros, Romeo y Julieta Cedros de Luxe, the collection book or the next replica humidor.
In the course of this year, perhaps we will know more about whether these are for this year or might be reserved for next year or…
Nevertheless, on the opening night at Club Habana we received the Hoyo de Monterrey San Juan (Geniales: 54 x 150) and the new Partagas Series D No.6 (D No.6: 50 x 90).
Regarding the D6, we remember that this is actually a small nub.
With it’s a 90 mm length, it is as long as the H. Upmann Half Corona which is a very nice short smoke.
The question is whether this also qualifies as a 50 cepo cigar (since the whole D - series has a cepo of 50).
On Tuesday we planned a private party at our villa, yet we still had a lot of "actes présences" to do. We had a quick drink at the Cigar Aficionado party where guests were offered this year’s CA No. 1: the emblematic Montecristo No.2. We also popped in at the Melia Cohiba to afterwards rush for a drink at the Hotel Nacional. At this reception a humidor was going to be auctioned...
Last year we placed the winning bid on a replica of the famous Hotel Nacional, but this year, artist Alfredo Gómez Cervantes surpassed himself. This year he created the humidor "Mi Habana". The humidor carries the four main symbols of Havana: El Morro, symbol of Havana Giraldilla, hotel Nacional and on top there is an exact copy of the Paseo del Prado - beautiful and more artistic than the previous humidor. You can guess what happened... Soon we’ll have to rearrange a whole display window of one of our shops to fit in this massif work of art. For the time being, we’re considering to place this humidor in the lounge of our shop in Knokke.
At the Trinidad evening at the Museo de Bellas Artes we received the new Trinidad Vigía. As you may recall, after the discontinuation of the Robusto Robusto T and Robusto Extra there was some panic. What will eventually happen to Trinidad? Is the entire brand going to be discontinued? Ultimately, the goal was to bring renewed attention to this brand to make it thrive again. Habanos SA has succeeded in its intent to give it a second life. With the introduction of the Vigia, it fills the gap with the aforementioned models and it answers the market demand for short and thicker cigars. The Vigia with a cepo of 54 and length of 110 is a classic "short fatty". We have already smoked it and yes ... it is promising.
That same night one of the new Edicion Limitadas was also showcased: the Cohiba Robustos Supremos. Originally, it was meant to be a magnificos (55 x 127), but on the presentation sheet it was suddenly presented as a cepo 58 (!). This is definitely the biggest "regular" Habano ever made and we silently wonder how long it will take till the mythical limit of 60 is achieved. We have been informed that a vitola of such cepo is already listed... We’ve been told that the market demands larger cepos, so we guess that must be true. The band that graced our sticks was anyway too small...
The highlight of the week, however, was the gala. Apart from enjoying a guest performance by living legend Tom Jones, we smoked the new H. Upmann No.2 Reserva, but we mainly went for the auction of the humidors. As you may know, every year there are several humidors auctioned by Simon Chase. The proceeds of the auction will be used for Cuban health care. These are absolute gems and they often contain extremely unique cigars.
Before the auction, Belgian beer sommelier and publisher of cigar magazine El Gusto Ben Vinken was allowed to receive the Hombre Habano award in the category "Communication". The atmosphere was good in the Belgian team, and under optimal conditions the auction could start.
After an exciting bidding, we can call the H. Upmann humidor our own. This humidor is in the form of the old H. Upmann factory facade. It is an artwork of self-taught artisan Neury Alberto Santana Ges and contains classics, as well as some "specialties":
· 25 Prominentes (49 x 194)
· 20 Grandes (49 x 168)
· and ... 50 Butifarra No..2 (58 x 129)
In 2011 an H. Upmann humidor with some Butifarras was already auctioned. In the underground cigar scene these quickly got a legendary status; undoubtedly, because of the "old school" vitola (flying pig). The sequel is the No.Butifarra.2 and this "would" be included in the replica humidor for 2014. We are in any case very pleased with this acquisition, the H. Upmann humidor of the H. Upmann Reserva evening!
Luck was certainly on our table’s side, since one of our friends also placed the winning bid on the Cohiba humidor. Also an absolute work of art, this humidor has been crafted by none other but Jose Ernesto Aguilera Reino. We are already fans of this artist who very skillfully combines metalworking with carpentering. This humidor also includes a number of unique vitolas:
· 25 Sublimes Extra (54 x 184) once part of the collection book of 2008 (which is now effortlessly auctioned at three times the original price)
· 25 Petit Robusto (50 x 102)
· 25 Majestuoso (58 x 160)
· 25 Robustos Especiales (50 x 192)
After the auction, marketing manager Ana Lopez, personally handed us an H. Upmann No.2 Reserva. A warm ending to a fabulous evening!
With habanophile regards,
Dominique & Frederic

H. Upmann Connoisseur Series!
We love H. Upmann!
Dear fellow aficionados ,
Let’s cut to the chase: we love H. Upmann !
H. Upmann is not exactly a hip and sexy brand, but does know how to charm a fan. The fans especially appreciate the typical pure and elegant palette of the brand. No powerhouse, but a sophisticated elegant style . We like!
Maybe it has to do with the fact that the brand once has been owned by a British importer and that it is therefore more in line with the European palette. Who knows?
This question relates to the origin of the brand and there are several versions of this we don’t want you not to be informed of.
It has been published that “H. Upmann” refers to Herman Upmann . On the boxes there is also a signature "H. Upmann" with the exact words "This is my Signature" (in case you might wonder whose signature other than his it could be). Other authors argue then that the brand was founded by brothers Herman and August Upmann and that “H.” refers to Hermanos or the Upmann "brothers" . Furthermore, there are versions that say that the family name was actually "Hupmann" and since the " H" is not pronounced in Spanish it was just omitted. However, this comes in conflict with the line "This is my Signature".
Some people also claim that the (H) Upmann brothers were bankers . That seems to be incorrect. Supposedly it were the cousins who owned a bank.
Anyway in 1922 the brand got into the hands of the British. Bigots claim that this might have to do with the sequels of the First World War. Who knows?
Nevertheless, the brand has in all respects an eventful history behind it, and we look forward to the lecture on the history of the brand at the Habanos Festival.
If you cannot wait that long, you can already read the excellent article by Claudia Puszkar published in Cigar Journal . An absolute must read! Please, follow the link: http://www.cigarjournal.co/index.php/us/archive/habanos-corner/1452-ausgabe-12013--wenn-die-herkunft-zum-verhaengnis-wird-ndie-h-upmann-manufaktur
Following the upcoming lecture and the latest H. Upmann release, we are also happy not only to reflect on the brand but also to highlight the Connoisseur series.
We are tempted to say: "Everyone knows the H. Upmann Connoisseur No. 1", but that is not the case . For some this cigar still remains undiscovered (quite undeservingly). However, the cigar for the last five years (except for 2012) has been attributed the maximum score of five bands in the French magazine L' Amateur de Cigare cigars. That qualifies as a record.
Following the H. Upmann Connoisseur No. 1 there is now a sequel to this one and immediately a new line. Fully in line with Cuban logic, no connoisseur No. 2 , but… an "A ", the H. Upmann Connoisseur A.
It is a La Casa del Habano exclusive and is therefore only available in a La Casa del Habano .
The Connoisseur A can safely be called the big brother of the "Connie No. 1". The Connoisseur No. 1 is indeed a Hermosos No . 4 (45 x 127), while the "Connie A" is a larger Genios (52 x 140) .
On the other hand, Cubans are again very consistent in their description. We recently discovered a cabinet H. Upmann Connossieur No. 1. We had never imagined that a sequel would mention the same whopping typo. Indeed, the first batch of H. Upmann Connoisseur A mentions both on the cabinets, the bands ànd the ribbons in huge letters Connossieur A! It has been confirmed that this typo will be put right but so far all deliveries we get mention Connossieur A. A nice gadget and perhaps unique.
Finally, we would like to mention that - in general - H. Upmann cigars age very nicely. In the beginning they are rather mild and bland , but as they get older they gain strength (+/- 5 years) and then after a period of +/- 10 year they become again milder, a bit tea-like.
In addition to the Connoisseur No. 1 and Connoisseur A , we find the following vitolas of H. Upmann highly recommendable:
Majestic : 105 Euros per 25
Half Corona ( ! ): 105 Euros per 25
Lonsdale: 350 Euros per 25
Noella ( ! ): 325 Euros per 25
Magnum 46 ( ! ): 285 Euros per 25
Magnum 48 EL2009: 350 Euros per 25
Magnum 50: 350 Euros per 25
Magnum 50: 660 Euros per 50
Robustos EL2012: 375 Euros per 25
Royal Robusto ( ! ): 110 Euros per 10
No. 2 ( ! ): 285 Euros per 25
Sir Winston Churchill: 525 Euros per 25
We have them all still available.
If interested do not hesitate to contact us. We’d be happy to help you out.
With habanophile regards ,

15th Habanos Festival
Dear fellow aficionado's,
The 15th Habanos Festival has reached an end.
Not only were these days exciting, but also very intense for us.
We got the confirmation of the new launches (see previous mailing) and could already taste them. The test specimens were freshly rolled, yet we have high expectations of the Montecristo Double Edmundo and especially of the Partagas Lusitanias Gran Reserva.
Apart from the classic auction at the gala dinner, we went through another auction. At the Hotel Nacional a giant humidor in the form of the hotel has been auctioned ... it is now being shipped to Belgium as you read these lines! The humidor will be the jewel of our new La Casa del Habano in Ghent.
The hotel has a Spanish-Moorish touch and is built with clear Art Deco influences. This has clearly influenced its famous hotel guests: celebrities like Johnny Weissmuller, Buster Keaton, Tyrone Power, Errol Flynn, Marlon Brando and Ernest Hemingway. The guest list includes mobsters Santos Trafficante, Meyer Lansky, Lucky Luciano and Frank Costello. The reputation of the hotel was probably raised by guests like Winston Churchill and Alexander Fleming. Hotel Nacional is one of the few five star hotels in Havana.
The artist has, therefore, had a considerable task to complete which took him eight months.
The humidor itself included 150 cigars: 50 Cohiba Behike 52s, 50 Cohiba Behike 56s and 50 Romeo y Julieta Churchills.
So it will be soon be seen at our new Casa!
Following the festival, we had a real Harley-trip planned and we can proudly announce that Frederic and Hirochi Robaina received the wings of the Cuban Harlistas club from the hands of its President Luis Enrique!
An unforgettable Festival!
With habanophile greetings,
Dominique & Frédéric,
La Casa del Habano Knokke
What's up for 2013?
Dear fellow aficionado's,
As always, we keep our finger on the pulse.
Soon the 15th Habanos Festival will take place. During this festival, the new products for 2013 are being presented. Living up to your expectations as your trusted house of the best Habanos, we can lift the tip of the veil. Since some things have already leaked out, we happily share them with you.
The first thing that’s eagerly awaited for are the Limitadas for 2013. These Limitadas are actually not that limited anymore, but, on the other hand, are unique in that (since 2007) all leaves (wrapper, binder and filler) have been matured for two years. This gives the cigar in question a deeper flavor which makes classical milder marcas somewhat stronger.
- Hoyo de Monterrey after being out for a year is back in action and brings another Limitada: the Grand Epicure. It is not a tiny and new vitola: the Capuleto (52 x 162)
- Romeo y Julieta is already out of the running since 2009 and is back this year with a deluxe edition: the Romeo de Luxe. The corresponding format is a classic: the Campanas (52 x 140) This format, which we already know from the Bolivar Belicosos Finos, San Cristobal de la Habana La Punta, Sancho Panza Belicosos, actually already exists within Romeo y Julieta, meaning the Romeo y Julieta Belicosos. We are curious ...
- But what we are most curious about is the Punch Series d' Oro No. 2. It is the first time that Punch brings out a Limitada and that makes us, of course, curious. After the Series d' Oro No. 1 which came out in 2008 for the UK market, we may expect a sequel in 2013, the No. 2. The trend of short fatties is further shown in this new Limitada assigned format, a Montesco (55 x 130). This format is exactly the same one as the Romeo y Julieta Wide Churchill. Hopefully, just as in the case of Ramon Allones, the old band used for the Punch Diademas Extra ER Italia will be used again. We'll see.
We are also looking very much forward to the new Gran Reserva. Le roi des havanes et le havane des rois, meaning the Partagas Lusitanias, receives this honor. An absolute classic in a 5-year-old jacket. More than promising!
Moreover, the regular segment of Montecristo could be further completed. After the Edmundo and the Petit Edmundo we may expect the Edmundo Superior. The line would also be further complemented by a Petit No. 2.
Furthermore, attention has been paid again to LCDH-exclusivos and there are even 2 exclusivos in the pipeline:
- The Bolivar Libertador, once a very successful regional edition for the French market, and the
- H. Upmann Connoisseur, which – judging from the reputation of the marca and the Connoisseur No. 1 - creates high expectations.
The Book Collection comes out with the Partagas Series E No.1., the sequel of the Series E No. 2- entirely reflecting Cuban “logic” -, about which rumors are circulating that it will be discontinued.
None of this is officially confirmed and we are very curious about what we’ll see and hear at the Festival.
We’ll keep you updated!
A tribute to world’s most popular cigar smokers of the 20th century!
Great people and Cuban cigars are in the past century irrevocably linked to each other. In honour of some unique personalities, La Casa del Habano Knokke developed in collaboration with portrait artist Jorg Schelfhout a set of jars. These show each a sketch of a well known smoker of the 20th century: Winston Churchill, John F. Kennedy and Fidel Castro (ranking according to Cigar Afficionado). The cigars in the jar are in accordance with the preferred brand of the person depicted on the jar Artist Jorg Schelfhout feels an inexpressible impulsion that forces him to realize ideas in a concrete matter what stirs him inwardly. This is the source of the poetry that inspires most of his works. Each of his artworks is a compromise between sensory perception and extra - sensorial feelings. Together they build the indeterminate element in his work. In most of his works, Jorg reaches an extreme gravity, a borderline between dream and reality. .

July: Cigar of the month!
H. Upmann N°2!
As LCDH, we think it's important to highlight once in a while a module which is less known amongst the larger public.
The Piramides is one of them, a conic module with a pointy head which resembles a Pyramid. Very often, this module is being confused with a torpedo which is also a double figurado.
The most famous Piramides is without any doubt the Montecristo N°2, however Montecristo isn't the only brand which has a Piramides. H. Upmann also has a Piramides in its portofolio: the H. Upmann N°2.
The N°2 is the preferred number for Piramides. Diplomaticos has a N°2 (not available in BeNeLux) and the P2 from Partagas is also a Piramides. The only exception is Vegas Robaine which called its Piramides the Unicos.
Piramides are becoming "trendy" again, the module has been used for different Limitada's and we are expecting a new Piramides in September, the Cohiba Piramides Extra.
Although tastes differ most aficionado's agree that the H. Upmann N°2 is a more than worthy competitor of the Montecristo N°2 and even if the Montecristo N°2 is much more popular, "connaisseurs" from over the world prefer the H. Upmann N°2 over the Montecristo N°2!
Price/quality it's an excellent cigar, offering you 90 minutes of pleasure for 11 EURO per stick.
- H. Upmann N°2
- 52 x 156
- 11 EURO/stick or 275 EURO/box
May: Cigar of the month!

Review of the 14th Habanos Festival!
New vitolas for 2012!
End of last month we visited the 14th Habanos Festival in Havana, Cuba! This Festival is being organised every year by Habanos and it gives the opportunity to visit the tobacco fields and cigar factories which are normally not open to the public. Next to those extraordinary visits most new products launched in 2012 were presented during this beautiful event!
First of all the Cohiba Linéa Classica is being extended with a Piramides. In the previous years Cohiba presented a Piramides in the Millenium release and two times in the Limited Edition series. This year we can expect the Cohiba Piramides Extra with a new cigar band which is a combination of the classic Cohiba cigar band and the Behike cigar band. I've tasted one on the release night and I must say, it's a winner!
The Romeo y Julieta family also presented a new vitola in the Churchill - line. Next to the Churchill, the Short Churchill and the Wide Churchill we are happy to welcome the Petit Churchill. I also had the opportunity to tase this one and I must say this is a full bodied petit robusto!
Jar collectors among us will be happy to know that San Cristobal de La Habana is launching the Torréon.
Next to all these new releases we were also presented the 1st Limitada 2012: the Montecristo 520. This impressive cigar with a ring of 55 is released to celebrate the discovery of the new world 520 years ago.
The two other Limitadas 2012 which will be presented later this year are:
- Upmann Robusto
(1.000 boxes were for sale during the festival but without the Limitada bands)
- Partagas C No.3
La Gloria Cubana Belux N.1!
Available as of Monday 13/2!
Since a couple of yearsHabanos offers the possibility to selected importers around the world to develop exclusive "regional" editions. After 5 Benelux Exclusivos:
- Ramon Allones Specially Selected Gran Robusto (2007/2008)
- Punch Royal (2009)
- Bolivar Fabulosos (2009)
- Fonseca N.4 (2010
- Juan Lopez N.3 (2010)
There is now for the first timea Habano exclusive for Belgium and Luxemburg, the La Gloria Cubana Belux N.1!
LGC is a jewel within the Habanos brands but relatively unknown to thelarger public. The brand was introduced in 1885 and has a rich history which was recently completed by the LGC Inmensos exclusivo LCDH and now with the Belux N.1.
For the LGC Belux N.1a Genios module as vitola was selected with a Cepo 52 and a length of 140mm. This vitola was year to date only used for the Cohiba Maduro Genios.
This one off andlimited production is being offered in 3.500 boxes of 10 cigars. This unique release is of course the Cigar of the month February.
Orders canbe placed via our website our via firstname.lastname@example.org.
